For Parents of neurodivergent children - Four Workbooks in One
Parents of neurodivergent children are often made to feel as if they are to blame for the way their kids respond and behave. As a Special Educational Needs Coordinator who is herself neurodivergent, this has always felt extremely unfair. This collection was made for a series of workshops I gave to parents of neurodivergent children in the UK. I hope you get some ideas from this and some validation.
Behaviour is Communication:
The way your child behaves tells you how they feel. They do not mean to be difficult, to be angry, to be anxious. They are in a survival state.
Diagnoses, assessments, and labels
Please remember that I am not an expert in this. All I am trying to do is to give you a basic understanding of how it all works. Donât take it as gospel. Do your own research after reading this.
Their neurodivergence is not the problem
They are different from the neurotypical. That doesnât make them a problem. It is the trauma that builds up around their being different that causes them anxiety, depression, and overwhelm. Find out how to best support them.
What schools should know
Teachers are taught very little about neurodivergence. This means they are ill equipped to support your child. What are the things they should know and how can you suggest strategies in a way that doesnât make you come across as âthat difficult parentâ?
